Biography:
Registered Hettinger county. Born, Crashaserenger, Hungary, May 29, 1896. Naturalized citizen. Occupation - tailor. Enlisted in Company K, 1st Infantry, North Dakota National Guard, at Dickinson, on June 13, 1917. Served in Company K, 1st Infantry, North Dakota National Guard (Company K, 164th Infantry), to Jan. 19, 1918; Company H, 16th Infantry, to death. Grades: Private 1st Class, May 29, 1918; Corporal, Aug. 1, 1918. Overseas from Dec. 15, 1917, to death. Engagements: Defensive: Montdidier-Noyon. Offensives: Aisne-Marne; St. Mihiel. Defensive Sectors: Ansauville and Saizerais (Lorraine); Cantigny (Picardy). Cited in General Orders No. 1, Headquarters, 1st Division, Camp Zachary Taylor, Ky., Jan. 1, 1920, for gallantry in action and espeically meritorious services. Cited in General Orders No. 69, Headquarters, 1st Division, AEF, France, Oct. 17, 1918, for distinguished conduct during the operations against the St. Mihiel salient on Sept. 12-13, 1918. "Near Richecourt, France, Sept. 12, 1918, displayed unusual coolness and courage under heavy shell fire by appointing a leader for his squad and ordering it forward in an orderly manner after he and his second in command had been wounded." Cited in Citation Orders No. 6, General Headquarters, AEF, France, June 3, 1919, for gallantry in action near Richecourt, France, Sept. 12, 1918, and for his leadership of his squad. Entitled to wear two silver stars.
