Biography:
Carl Julius Woods served his country during the Vietnam War when he gave his all in the line of duty. He enlisted in the United States Navy and entered the service via Regular Military. Woods had the rank of Lieutenant Commander, service number assignment was 593646, attached to 7th Fleet, Carrier Air Wing 19, Attack Squadron (VA-196), Task Force 77, USS Bon Homme Richard CVA 31. He was born on June 8, 1933, and home is listed as Bottineau, Bottineau County, North Dakota. On September 28, 1965, Lieutenant Commander Woods was flying an armed reconnaissance mission near Qui Vinh, North Vietnam. His A-1H was hit by antiaircraft artillery. Woods flew the burning aircraft 40 miles to the Tonkin Gulf, where he bailed out. A Search and Rescue (SAR) helo arrived quickly, but Lieutenant Commander Woods was already dead. He most likely drowned. He received the Purple Heart. Lieutenant Commander Woods is honored on the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial in Washington, DC. His name is inscribed at VVM Wall, Panel 02e, Line 97.
