Biography:
Not a registrant, enlisted prior. Born, Viroqua, Wis., Sept. 3, 1893, of German-American parents. Occupation - carpenter. Enlisted in Company F, 1st Infantry, North Dakota National Guard, at Mandan, on May 9, 1917. Served in Company F, 1st Infantry, North Dakota National Guard (Company M, 26th Infantry), to death. Grades: Cook, July 28, 1917; Private 1st Class, Oct. 23, 1917; Cook, Jan. 27, 1918; Private 1st Class, April 1, 1918. Overseas from Dec. 15, 1917, to death. Engagements: Defensive: Montdidier-Noyon. Offensive: Aisne-Marne. Defensive Sectors: Ansauville (Lorraine); Cantigny (Picardy). Cited in General Orders No. 1, Headquarters, 1st Division, Camp Zachary Taylor, Ky., Jan.1, 1920, for gallantry in action and especially meritorious services. Entitled to wear a silver star.
