Biography:

Clayton Erling Foss was born in Hawley, Clay County, Minnesota on August 27, 1921, to Erling and Mina Kristiansdatter Bakken Foss. He became a resident of Cass County, North Dakota and entered the United States Army at Fort Snelling, Minnesota on December 21, 1942.  He married Helena B. Clough. Private Foss served in the European African Middle Eastern Theater and died of wounds on May 6, 1945, in Via Cassia, Italy. He is buried in Plot F, Row 4, Grave 25, Florence American Cemetery and Memorial, Florence, Italy. Private Foss received the Purple Heart.
