Registered McLean County. Born, Berlin, Germany, March 5, 1891. Naturalized citizen. Occupation - laborer. Enlisted in Company K, 1st Infantry, North Dakota National Guard, at Fort Lincoln, on July 4, 1917. Served in Company K, 1st Infantry, North Dakota National Guard (Company K, 164th Infantry), to Jan. 9, 1918; Company I, 16th Infantry, to discharge. Grades: Corporal, Oct. 13, 1918; Private, May 20, 1919. Discharged at Selters, Germany, July 22, 1919, as a Private. Cited in General Orders No. 5, Headquarters, 1st Infantry Brigade, AEF, Selters, Germany, June 1, 1919, for gallant and courageous conduct during his participation in three of the four major operations of the Division: Montdidier-Noyon defensive; Aisne-Marne offensive; St. Mihiel offensive; Meuse-Argonne offensive. Entitled to wear a silver star.
