Bergman enlisted in Lisbon, North Dakota on 1 April 1941. He graduated from Ellendale High School in 1940. He enlisted in the 188th Field Artillery unit of the National Guard at Oakes, North Dakota, later transferring to the Air Force. He was attached to the Eight Air Force in England. Lt Bergman in his last letter home said that he had completed his 18th mission. Shot down by fighters. Pilot Lt. Elmer J. Nardi. Target Wilhelmshaven.
