Died in service from wounds received in action in Germany

Biography:

Mr. and Mrs. Harry Billings of Drake received word from the Government Friday that their son, 2nd Lieutenant Harvey F. Billings died April 28th (his mother’s birthday) in Germany from wounds received in action.

Lieut. Billings, a member of Battery C., 496th Armored Field Battalion was commander of a tank crew, which had spearheaded in the European Theatre of War for the 15th, 17th, and 3rd armies.

Lieut. Harvey F. Billings, age 22 years, 2 months, and six days, was born March 13th, 1923 in Drake. He attended the Drake school and graduated from high school in June 1940. On August 5th of that year, he enlisted in the army and after his training served two years and four months in Alaska and the Aleutian Islands. He was returned to the United States in May of 1943 and attended Officers Training School before being sent to the European Theatre of War on January 17th of this year. On Sept. 15th, 1944, he was united in marriage to Sammie Cubley at Wichita Falls, Texas. Mrs. Billings has been doing defense work in Texas since her husband was sent overseas. Harvey was very active in sports during his school years.

He leaves to mourn his untimely passing his wife, his parents, two sisters, Joyce at home and Mrs. V. E. Axen (Gloria) of Los Angeles, Calif., and two brothers, Woodrow Hamers of Drake and Marine Sgt Duane Hamers who is in the Pacific Theatre of War. Also his grandmother, Mrs. Kate McCarter of Drake. His wife and her mother, and Mrs. Axen are expected here for the Memorial Services.

Harvey is buried in the American Legion Plot at Drake City Public Cemetery, Drake, North Dakota.
