Circumstances:

According to records kept by the POW medical staff, Harvey was admitted to the camp hospital on June 18, 1942, suffering from dysentery and a poor diet, and assigned to Barracks 3. Since the medical staff had no medicine to treat him, his condition grew worse. The records also show that on Wednesday, July 1, 1942, at approximately 4:00 A.M., 1st Lt. Harvey F. Rice died from malaria, dysentery, and inanition. He was the 498 POW to die in the camp. After his death, he was buried in the camp cemetery in Grave 1010 with four other members of the tank group.

born Van Hook, ND 17 Oct 17; resident Ramsey County, ND; entered AUS Ft Lewis, Washington 11 Jun 41; served Asiatic Pacific Theater; died in service 1 Jul 42 POW Philippine Islands; memorialized on the Walls of the Missing in the New American Military Cemetery, Manila, Philippine Islands. 

In 2018 his family was contacted by the Army looking for DNA samples as they believed that they found his body in a mass grave.
