Biography:

John Alexander Murphy was born in Culbertson, Roosevelt County, Montana on May 9, 1926, to John (Jack) P. Murphy and Mary Houle Murphy. He was a resident of Benson, Ramsey County, North Dakota and entered the United States Marine Corps in Omaha, Nebraska on November 10, 1943. Private First Class Murphy served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater and died in service on February 23, 1945, in Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Japan. He is buried in Block 33, Lot 1, Space 4, Saint Joseph 2nd Addition, Veteran Area, Grand Army of the Republic Cemetery, (AKA Devils Lake Cemetery, GAR Cemetery) Devils Lake, North Dakota.
