Circumstances:

On February 9, 1945 he was on the crew of the B-24 Liberator #42-7563 during a mission to drop supplies to partisans fighting the Nazis in Yugoslavia. Their aircraft exploded in mid-air as they crossed the Adriatic coast over present day Croatia.
