Lyle Robert Smith was born on July 12, 1926, in Ross, Mountrail County, North Dakota to Leonard Lindlie (Leo Lindley) and Anna C. Smith. He entered AUS Fort Snelling, Minnesota on October 24, 1944, and served in Germany. He died in Germany on June 23, 1945, and is buried in Block 24, Grave 4, Section 4, Fairview Cemetery, Stanley, North Dakota. Private First Class Smith received the American Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal
