Biography:
Marvin Clarence Briss was drafted into the United States Army via Selective Service in May 1968 and began his tour on October 7, 1968. He had the rank of Specialist 4th Class, and his military occupation or specialty was Light Weapons Infantry. He was attached to the 9th Infantry Division, 5th Battalion, 60th Infantry, E Company.
Marvin Briss was born on November 6, 1948, in Cooperstown, Griggs County, North Dakota, to Clarence Lawrence and Ella Josephine Walen Briss.
Specialist 4th Class Briss was wounded and hospitalized in early April 1969 and lost his life on May 28, 1969, in South Vietnam, Long An province and is buried at the Glenfield Cemetery, Glenfield, Foster County, North Dakota. He received the Purple Heart, the Air Medal, the Army Commendation Medal for Heroism, and is honored on the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial in Washington, DC, name inscribed at VVM Wall, Panel 23w, Line 006.
Specialist 4th Class Briss was featured in the June 27, 1969, LIFE magazine cover article entitled "The Faces of the American Dead in Vietnam: One Week's Toll."
