The destroyer Ingraham on July 19, 1941 and with the outbreak of World War II commenced escort duty for convoys sailing from New York and Halifax to the British Isles. Depth charges on her stern exploded. Only 11 men survived the collision. She was struck from the Naval Vessel Register on 11 September 1942. The Destroyer U.S.S. Haynsworth was named in the Commanders honor and commissioned on June 22, 1944.
