Circumstances:

On 02-01-1968 at 4:30am, elements of the Viet Cong Army attacked Province Headquarters and the Engineer School at Phú Cường. The enemy quickly penetrated the Engineer School compound and seized control of the northern portion. They occupied sections of the city but were unable to capture the province headquarters. A South Vietnamese ARVN Army counterattacked. By 11am they had regained control of the school. By 6:30pm, Phú Cường was cleared. This action resulted in 98 Viet Cong Army soldiers Killed in Action.

On 02-02-1968, fighting resumed in and around the city of Phú Cường. A Company of the 1st Infantry Division in defensive positions came under attack from a Viet Cong Army Regiment. According to information obtained from captured Viet Cong Prisoners of War, their battalion sustained 50% casualties.

The 4th Cavalry Regiment left Phú Lợi on a recon-in-force mission of An My and the Viet Cong Army hit this force with Claymore Mines, Rocket Propelled Grenades, and Small Arms. The battle which raged until 6pm when the 1st Infantry Division ordered them to break contact and return to Phú Lợi.

On 02-03-1968, 4th Cavalry Regiment returned to An My and found that the Viet Cong Army was still there. The battle continued to 7pm when a sweep revealed 372 Viet Cong soldiers killed. US losses were 32-Wounded in Action and 5-Killed in Action, including Pfc. Raymond Kramer. Pfc. Kramer died through hostile action- small arms fire.
