Circumstances:
During Operation MAMELUKE THRUST, a helicopter on resupply mission to ground troops in the vicinity of Le Nam (3) in the Duy Xuyen District of Quang Nam Province crashed and was consumed by fire.
On lifting off from the LZ, a CH-46D was hit by enemy ground fire, the pilot Capt. Himler (then 1stLt) attempted to fly away and land however the airborne aircraft caught fire, lost control and crashed. The only member rescued was the crew chief, three crew members were killed in the crash. Capt Himler was one of the casualties,
Biography:
Robert the husband of Doris P. Himler of Atmore Alabama, the son of Joseph O. Himler of Williston North Dakota and Dorothy E. Fluegel of La Moure ND enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on March 18 1966 and upon completion of OCS was commissioned as a 2d Lieutenant (Reserve)in Quantico VA. In Vietnam he was assigned to and serving with HMM-265, MAG-16, 9th MAB, FMFPac.
He is buried in Riverview Cemetery - Williston, ND.
