Circumstances:
Died in service in Saipan; Not confirmed however family has understood that his unit was landed on the wrong beach in Saipan and the Japanese wiped out the entire unit before they even got to the beach. That beach had not been previously bombarded, so the Japanese were in full strength. However, history indicates that Saipan was secured on July 9, 1944. It could be that Roland was killed during the campaign.
