Registered (place not given). Born, Holdingford, N. Dak., April, 1896, of (nationality of parents not given). Occupation - unknown. Enlisted in Company C, 2nd Infantry, North Dakota National Guard, at Kermit, on July 12, 1917. Called into federal service, World War, on July 15, 1917. Served in Company C, 2nd Infantry, North Dakota National Guard, to Oct. 15, 1917; Company E, 164th Infantry, to March 8, 1918; Casual Detachment, 41st Division, to March 10, 1918; Company G, 163rd Infantry, to March 13, 1918; Company E, 163rd Infantry, to April 23, 1918; Company K, 125th Infantry, to death. Overseas from Jan. 11, 1918, to death. Engagements: Offensives: Aisne-Marne; Oise-Aisne; Meuse-Argonne. Defensive Sector: Center (Alsace). Awarded Distinguished Service Cross, for extraordinary heroism in action near Gesnes, France, Oct. 9, 1918. Exposing himself to the greatest danger, he constantly carried messages from the company to the platonns occupying the front lines. The journey necessitated his crossing an area swept by intense artillery and withering machine gun fire, but he successfully maintained liasion during a very critical period of the attack.
