Biography:
Sergeant Gerszewski was born in Ardoch, North Dakota on April 5, 1912. He entered the US Army at Ft Snelling, Minnesota on March 21, 1942. He served in the European African Middle Eastern Theater and was killed in action on April 9, 1945, in Heilbronn, Germany. He is buried in Plot 2, Grave 5, Section 589 in the Cavalry Cemetery, Grand Forks, North Dakota. Following his death, he received a silver star and a purple heart and the U.S. Army base in Karlsruhe, West Germany was named in his honor - Gerszewski Barracks. He is the only North Dakotan who has a United States Military Installation named after them. Following the Cold War the the property the Barracks were on was returned to the German Government.
