Biography:
LeRoy Bert Stenberg was born in Hamberg, Eddy County, North Dakota on September 2, 1923, to Frank W. Stenberg and Bertha Dablow. He entered the United States Marine Corps in Minneapolis, Minnesota on December 11, 1942. In the Pacific area he was in the battles: Vella La Vella, Empress of Augusta Bay, Bouganville, and Iwo Jima. He was wounded hospitalized and given a furlough in 1944. Afterwards he returned to military duty with a Co I, 3 Bat., 26 Marines, 5th Division. He received the Silver Star.
Corporal Stenberg served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater and was killed in action on March 3, 1945, in the Battle of Iwo Jima, Ogasawara-shicho, Tokyo Metropolis, Japan. United States NR Chaplain H. E. Van Meter reported that Corporal Stenberg was acting as Squad Leader for a Machine Gun Squad covering the advance of our rifle men when he was struck down. He was buried in Grave Number 1156 in the Division Cemetery. The cemetery, a beautiful spot high on the west beach between the mountain and the First Air Strip, has a fine gateway and flagpole. A brief committal service was read and later a religious memorial service was held in Rose City Cemetery, Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon, Grave 9, East 1 of Lot 92, Section 8.
